Margarita Howard Leads HX5 Through Two Decades of Federal Work

HX5 has a single owner at the top. Margarita Howard serves as its sole owner, CEO, and president. The company, based in Florida, is both service-disabled veteran-owned and women-owned, and it celebrated 20 years in business in 2024.

A National Footprint

HX5 now has more than 1,000 employees working across 34 states and 90 government locations. Its services center on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and its main federal customers are NASA and the Department of Defense.

The workforce is highly educated. Howard told Home Business Magazine that most employees hold college degrees. Leadership follows the same pattern. She said that “the majority of our management team is comprised of women,” adding that many hold advanced degrees and all have deep experience in their fields.

Tenure is another distinguishing feature. Some employees have been with HX5 for 15 years, a notable figure for a company founded two decades ago. That kind of loyalty stands out at a time when younger workers frequently change jobs.

Preparing for the Next Generation

Margarita Howard is now adjusting the company for Generation Z. She described the group with enthusiasm and said HX5 has tried to adapt to its needs. The firm offers hybrid work models where security permits and has updated internal communication with instant messaging and interactive project management.

Experience remains her top hiring filter. Howard prefers candidates who have supported NASA or the Department of Defense, because work on those agencies’ programs differs from commercial experience.

She also emphasizes purpose. Howard tells potential hires that they should feel excited each morning about the program they support, whether that program aims for the moon or a mission overseas.

Technology is part of the plan as well. HX5 started working with artificial intelligence early, using it for proposal writing and audit documentation. Margarita Howard expects government agencies to make growing use of AI to streamline procurement by 2035. See related link for additional information.
